Running season 2006 is underway!!!

Hi all! Long time without an update I know. But I am back. I took a couple months off all running and biking after the marathon on October 30th and have been working my way back into shape since the beginning of the new year. The weather is starting to warm up and I have already made it for some runs and bike rides outside in the past few weeks. I feel faster on my feet already this year than I felt at the end of last season. Two weeks ago I was down in Boca Raton, Florida for spring break. Went out for amazing runs along the boardwalk, through the beautiful Spanish River Park, and along A1A Beachfront Avenue every morning or at sunset. Last weekend I competed in my first race of the new season - the 2006 Race for Justice, a 5K around Hains Point on Saturday March 18th. The race started at 8 a.m. on a morning that didn't reach 30 degrees. Hains Point is the name of the tip of an island that juts out into the Potomac River and is always ever so windy. Basically, it was bitter cold. When I took off running, the air was so cold it hurt my lungs. Breathing was difficult and there was some panicking in the first mile. It took about a mile to get to warmed up and then I ran a decent last two miles to the race crossing the finish line in 5th place out of about 200 runners at 19 minutes 35 seconds. Not terribly disappointing for my first race of the season and given the conditions. I am currently running 5K's at 18:30-19:00 pretty consistently and hope to break 18:00 in a 5K race by the end of the season. That's about all for now. The next couple weeks should be exciting with the Cherry Blossom 10 miler this coming weekend and the IronMed Charity Triathlon the following weekend. Peace out.
